Royal BAM
Developing BAM´s Senior management to build broad enterprise leadership
Royal BAM Group is a successful European construction group operating in construction, property and civil engineering, as well as public-private partnerships. BAM has about 17,000 employees. In a unique partnership with GroupMapping, and Erasmus/Ashridge, UNLOQ has co-designed and delivered the Enterprise Leadership Programme for BAM´s senior management group from 2018 onwards. We are running the seventh cohort at present. During the pandemic, we delivered the programmes completely virtually.
Bespoke
design
The organisation is working on creating a new culture and fostering open collaboration, pro-active ownership, and scalable learning as their core behavioural values. BAM was looking for an innovative partner to co-create the programme to ensure the complex organisational challenges were met. During an intensive design phase, in-depth programme content was determined, and a tailor-made programme designed in close collaboration with our client. Working in partnership requires extra attention in communication and alignment and adds invaluable enrichment to the programme.
Participants are tasked with an
implementation challenge that brings to life these behaviours in the context of their work environment.
Two-dimensional
programme
The design resulted in a two-dimensional programme: a clear focus on building the capability of collaboration by design and a full leadership development dimension (leading self, leading others, leading strategy). The Enterprise Leadership Programme starts with a virtual session followed by a trio of three-day face-to-face modules (during the pandemic delivered virtually as a provisional measure). In between the modules, content teasers, assignments and virtual check-ins in small groups are organised to keep participants engaged. Peer-to-peer learning is facilitated and transferred to the participants, creating ownership and space for practising facilitation skills as part of their leadership toolkit. Throughout the ELP, all participants are engaged in a blended individual coaching process that builds upon their work during the live modules.
Collaborative
learning
The learning modules are designed for collaborative learning and contextual application of the content. Similarly, the sessions are delivered to provide opportunities to practice and embed leadership coaching behaviours from the outset. For example, participants are given the task of putting an implementation challenge into practice. This allows them to bring the new behaviour to life in the context of their work environment. The programme is finalised with a two-day summit where the executive board is invited into a collaborative session led by the participants and a closing celebration.

“Working with UNLOQ is a journey of true collaboration, trust, equality and fun. Together we developed the Enterprise Leaders Programme at Royal BAM Group, which proves to be very successful. Our senior leaders experience significant positive changes in their behaviour during and after the programme, which is sustainably enhanced by the excellent coaching trajectory offered to them as part of the programme.”
